Pastor: Bill Barnes
Bill Barnes was born and raised in Macon and a member of Mabel White Baptist Church from childhood. After receiving his B.A. in Business Administration from UGA in '08, he married Rebecca and they moved back to Macon. Bill and Rebecca were involved in an inner-city church and led a Christian recovery ministry until Bill felt called to seminary in 2012. Over the seven years his M.Div. took at RTS Atlanta, Bill has served as a Youth Director, VP of Retail Operations at the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia, and as Children's Ministry Director and Operations Manager at North Macon Presbyterian Church. Most recently, Bill was the Pastoral Intern at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Sandy Springs and was ordained on February 16th at Bonaire First Baptist Church. Bill and Rebecca have 2 sons: Liam (5) and Clay (3).
Bill’s pastoral heroes have been local men faithfully serving their flocks. His most significant preaching influence comes from Pastor John Piper, the retired long-time pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN. While he does not rival the mental capacity of Dr. Piper, he aspires to love and exposit the Word in similar fashion. Bill is a bit of an old-soul with an intentional desire not to build his “brand” but to follow the words in 1 Peter 5 regarding pastors:
shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
Worship Pastor: Ryan Maddox
"I am blessed and grateful for the opportunity to serve at Byron Baptist Church! Throughout my life, God has given me a passion for music and His word. Serving as Worship Pastor is the perfect way to marry both of those passions. These desires led me to pursue a Specialist's degree is Music Education from the University of Georgia in addition to seminary work and an Ordination into the Gospel ministry."
"On a personal note, I love golf and UGA sports (Go Dawgs!). Seafood is amazing and so is chocolate! While at UGA, God blessed me with with an amazing helpmate in my wife, Wesleigh. We now have three fantastic children, Benjamin, Caleb, and Kayleigh."
"My goal for every worship service is that our church members engage in authentic, Spirit-filled worship. Our God is great and worthy of our praise! I invite you to join us!"
Student Pastor: Phillip Odom
Phillip was born and raised in Cochran, Georgia and was a member of First Baptist Church from the time he was in the nursery to the time he graduated high school.
Phillip graduated from Bleckley County High School in 2012 and has worked as a Youth Intern at Limestone Baptist Church and a Youth and Children's director at Union Hill Baptist Church, both in Cochran, Georgia, and as a Student Ministry Intern at Second Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Georgia while completing his B.A. in English and A.S. in Psychology from Middle Georgia State University. Phillip has also served in every church that he's been a member of by serving on their respective worship teams or praise bands.
Phillip felt the calling to Student Ministry the summer before his senior year of high school when he also began dating, and then 7 years later marrying, his wife Britleigh.
Simply put, Phillip never wanted to grow up so he just became a professional kid.
Church Pianist: Joyia Morris
"I have been the pianist at Byron Baptist for about 22 years. I have been attending here since I was two years old. At age ten, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I have been involved in the music program in some form ever since."
"God sent my husband, Marshael, to me from Canton by way of Americus and he and I have raised three children here: Nicolas (wife Ashlee), DeLacey (husband Alex and son Graham), and Ansley (now living in Heaven). They also were saved and baptized here."
"I am a prime example of the phrase, 'God does not call the equipped; He equips the called,' for I truly could not serve Him without His help. I am honored and blessed to be serving here."
Church Organist: Mary Ann Scott
"I was born and raised in Butler (Taylor County), Georgia. At the age of nine, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior and joined Horeb Baptist Church. After graduating from Butler High School, I married Marshall Scott and we lived in Macon, Georgia and joined Bethesda Baptist Church. In 1968, we moved to Byron, Georgia and joined Byron Baptist Church where we currently worship."
"When I was in the fourth grade, I started piano lessons not knowing at that time that music would be an important part of my life. I have served in each of the above churches playing the piano, organ or singing in the choir for the majority of my life."
"Marshall and I have three children, Keith, Kim (Wes), and Kirk (Susan). We have five grandchildren and four great grands."
